Arthur Jones Painting Sells for $35,000

Christopher Madkour, executive director of the Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC) in Manchester, Vermont, announced the sale of Arthur Jones's painting Flag #7 to an undisclosed dealer and collector for $35,000, a record price for the artist. The painting sold on August 14 during a solo exhibition of Jones's work. The solo exhibition closed on September 5, but other works by the Vermont artist may be seen at SVAC's fall show, which opens on September 18.

"It's the highest price ever paid for a living artist's work here at the arts center," said Madkour, "and considering Arthur Jones's long history with SVAC, we couldn't be happier."

Jones, who paints from his home and studio in a 100-year-old barn in Dorset, Vermont, said, "It's funny. My first arts center show was fifty years ago, in 1954, and truthfully, I was beginning to think of this show as my swan song. I thought it would be fitting, but I'm told now that I need to rethink the retirement plans."
