July 28th, 2005
This 1 ¾" high carved ivory netsuke by Masaka showing an entertainer being attacked by his monkey, early 19th-century, sold for $6600 (est. $5000/5500). The fingers were about 1/16" across, and yet they were perfectly formed with precise fingernails. It combined all those features cherished by collectors: artist-signed, 19th-century creation, early form, and whimsical humor. Robert C. Eldred Company's Oriental Art Auction, East Dennis, Massachusetts, August 19-24, 1996.
