Newburyport, Massachusetts, dealer Paul DeCoste paid $8250 for this bust

July 28th, 2005
Newburyport, Massachusetts, dealer Paul DeCoste paid $8250 for this bust of a lady, a 19th-century carving in the American nautical tradition. Chuck DeLuca felt more comfortable referring to this as an architectural carving rather than calling her a ship's figurehead. She had previously belonged to the late nautical dealer Samuel Lowe of Charles Street, Boston. He paid $22,000 for it and went to his grave believing it to be a figurehead. Chuck DeLuca's (Maritime Auctions) Hyannis, Massachusetts, marine auction, July 20, 1996.
