On August 20, 1777, George Washington gave Philadelphia silversmith Edmund Milne (1724-1822) 16 silver dollars weighing 13 ounces 18 dwt. to make a dozen camp cups to serve wine to his officers in the field. Milne's charge for making them was 8 pounds 8 shillings.
